Comics For Hire #2: The Perils Of Dr. Pauline

Dr. Pauline in peril

In a follow-up to the Rasheed Wallace comic featured in a previous blog post, l have mounted all the episodes to date starting with this one, of an advertising series for SmartStart Practice, a service which provides veterinarians with the education and training to run their own businesses. The hapless heroine, Dr. Pauline, is an overworked vet perenially swamped by the details of maintaining her practice and in dire need of outside expertise.

I conceived of Dr. Pauline as pretty but harried-looking, like Rita, the clueless girlfriend on Dexter played by Julie Benz. Since I knew this would be a series, I took an extra step I had done with certain characters in David Chelsea In Love and Welcome To The Zone, and sculpted a plasticine head so she would look consistent through all the episodes.

As I had done with the Rasheed Wallace strip, I first laid the strip out in Indesign, adding panel borders and balloons to my thumnails. I drew the finishes over light blue hard copies on coquille board and added gray tones after scanning in Photoshop.
