24 Hour Comic: The Events

It’s going to be a full summer of activity for me, trying to build the 24 Hour Comic documentary into a hit. Here are some of the events I’m going to to be involved with:

– Tonalli’s Doughnuts in Portland on Saturday June 24th 6-9pm

– Premiere at Laurelhurst Theater in Portland Q&A Thursday July 6th at 7pm

– Matinee at Laurelhurst Theater in Portland Q&A Friday July 7th at 4pm

– Release day screening with Q&A at the Kiggins Theater in Vancouver, WA
Tuesday July 11th 7:30pm

– Wild Things Games in Salem, multiple events
Saturday July 15th (approx 10:30am-8:30pm)

– Film screening at San Diego Comic-Con (July 20th-23rd)

Details are somewhat sketchy as of now; I will add more as they come in.

24 Hour Comic Documentary On iTunes!

Milan Erceg’s terrific documentary about a topic close to my heart, 24 Hour Comic, is releasing July 11 on iTunes. The film follows 8 artists as they try to create 24 pages in 24 hours. It features me quite prominently, as well as my fellow cartoonists Paul Guinan, Rachel Nabors, Sera Stanton aka Opal Pence, Jacob Mercy, Pete Soloway, and Tom Lechner, and also has some delightful footage of my daughter Rebecca at 13, making her first attempt at a 24. Special guest appearance by comics guru Scott McCloud! This is the debut film from a very gifted filmmaker who happens to be a dear friend.

This Week on Patreon: More Scribe Illos, And Mandy Makes A Gookie!

I have been keeping on keeping on with my Patreon page– this week, I posted two new pages of my continuing web comic ARE YOU BEING WATCHED?, as well as another 10 illustrations with commentary from my 1970s beginnings at Portland’s underground newspaper the Scribe. I went back to the archive at Multnomah County Library to photograph some images I had missed from the first year of the newspaper, including my very first piece published in the Scribe, this ad for a concert benefiting my alma mater, the Metropolitan Learning Center:

IN THE STUDIO: Raster Vs. Vector!

Another episode of the ongoing podcast I do with Jacob Mercy just dropped on iTunes. In this installment, Jacob and I talk shop about the virtues and drawbacks of several computer drawing programs, most notably Adobe Illustrator and Clip Studio Paint (the software mysteriously formerly known as Manga Studio). We also get a preview of David’s new instructional book PERSPECTIVE IN ACTION, a discussion of cartoon dogs and what makes them funny, and some incidental chatter about Winsor McCay’s possible influence on Peter Max. In the Studio Episode Four: Mild Qualms About WILD PALMS

On this week’s podcast, Jacob and David dissect the serialized graphic novel WILD PALMS, the basis for the TV miniseries of the same name, written by Bruce Wagner and illustrated by Julian Allen in the early 1990s. Other topics of discussion include the virtues of kneaded erasers, which writers outside of comics David would like to collaborate with, the virtues of piracetam versus DMT, the gross yet strangely elegant comics of National Lampoon contributor Charles Rodrigues, and the Grid Project, in which illustrator Julian Allen cut his life’s work up into little squares. It’s the lively discussion of comics you’ve come to expect, and so much more!

24 HOUR COMIC Reviewed

I just read a very favorable and flattering review of the documentary 24 HOUR COMIC, in which I prominently appear, by Elias Savada on the website Film International. Money quote: “There’s also David Chelsea, sporting Harry Potter eyeglasses…. Chelsea’s self-referential idea for his day’s effort is to sketch a reality show comic book about the 24 hour comic event. With him as the host.” Savada also praises Milan Erceg’s direction, and the vivid screen presences of my fellow participants, including my daughter Rebecca. Mr. Chelsea Goes To Washington: The Blog Post and The Podcast

I’m ready to tell all you loyal readers about my trip to the DC Independent Film Festival on Presidents’ Day weekend. I was there for the premiere of Milan Erceg’s documentary 24 HOUR COMIC, in which I prominently appear along with seven other talented artists including my daughter Rebecca. The film records a 24 hour comic event at the comics shop TFAW in 2013.
